The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Rhode Island’s only school of medicine, is home to a community of scholars and physicians dedicated to the highest standards in education, research, and health care.
Since granting its first MD degrees in 1975, Alpert Medical School has become a national leader in medical education and biomedical research. By attracting first-class physicians and researchers to Rhode Island over the past three decades, the Medical School and its seven affiliated teaching hospitals have radically improved the state's health care environment, from health care policy to patient care.
The Alpert Medical School awards approximately 90 Doctor of Medicine degrees each year. Students are admitted to the School through a variety of pathways.
The Alpert Medical School is a component of Brown’s Division of Biology and Medicine, which also includes the Program in Biology and the Program in Public Health. Together with the Medical School’s seven affiliated teaching hospitals, the Division attracts more than $200 million in external research funding per year.

Along with its seven affiliated teaching hospitals, Alpert Medical School attracts first-rate physicians and researchers to Rhode Island and has radically improved health care in the state, from policy to patient care. The Medical School is home to Rhode Island’s first and only master of public health degree program and to ten active, nationally renowned public-health research centers. It awards approximately 90 Doctor of Medicine degrees each year.
The Medical School’s faculty exceeds 2,300, including approximately 150 campus-based biologists, 450 hospital-based clinicians, and 1,300 voluntary physicians. Organized into five basic science departments located on Brown’s campus and 14 clinical departments situated throughout Brown's affiliated hospitals, the School offers 22 residency training programs and more than 30 subspecialty fellowships. It is currently training more than 700 residents and fellows.
Brown’s thriving biomedical research enterprise includes nationally recognized centers, institutes and programs that generate groundbreaking discoveries in areas from public health to fetal therapies to cancer care. With the recent addition of the Laboratories for Molecular Medicine and the Sidney E. Frank Hall for Life Sciences, Alpert Medical School’s research capabilities are expanding dramatically. Alpert Medical School is situated on Brown University’s 140-acre campus on the historic, residential East Side of Providence. Residents and fellows have access to most University facilities, including the library system, which comprises six different libraries and contains more than four million items. The Sciences Library provides MEDLINE, a bibliographic retrieval system offering rapid access to citations from more than 1,200 medical journals. The campus features recreational and cultural facilities, including indoor and outdoor athletic centers, the Brown Bookstore and Computer Store, and presents a wide variety of music, theater, film and dance performances.
